The box is at its all-time low. The pull rate math is honest. Here is a verdict for every type of buyer, with live prices.
The Chaos Rising booster box MSRP is $160.99. That price exists at Best Buy, Walmart, and Target, in theory. In practice, hot Mega Evolution sets sell out at retail within hours on release day. The Pokemon Center exclusive ETB sold out in under two hours when preorders opened in April. By launch day on May 22, secondary market boxes were already trading between $239 and $307.
GameStop listed Chaos Rising at $299.99, which is $139 above MSRP, and it was not a scarcity issue. They simply priced to what the market would bear. A collector buying one box, one ETB, and one bundle at GameStop paid roughly $212 more than MSRP for the exact same products.
The current secondary market price of around $185 is the closest Chaos Rising boxes have been to MSRP since before launch. Whether that matters for your decision depends on what you plan to do with the box.
These rates are based on TCGplayer's sample of over 8,500 packs opened pre-launch, confirmed by community data. A standard Chaos Rising booster box contains 36 packs.
| Rarity | Rate (any) | Per box (36 packs) | Specific card odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Illustration Rare | 1 in 9 packs | ~4 per box | Varies by pool (11 IRs) |
| Ultra Rare | 1 in 10-12 packs | ~3 per box | Varies by pool |
| Any SIR | 1 in 83 packs | ~0.43 per box | Roughly 1 SIR per 2-3 boxes |
| Specific SIR (e.g. Greninja SIR) | 1 in 496 packs | ~0.07 per box | ~1 per 14 boxes |
| Mega Greninja ex MHR | 1 in 956 packs | ~0.04 per box | ~1 per 26-27 boxes |
The MHR rate is worth sitting with. At 1 in 956 packs, you would need to open roughly 26 booster boxes on average to pull a single Mega Greninja ex Mega Hyper Rare. The MHR currently sells for around $375. The math does not support opening for it.
The total value of all cards in Chaos Rising is around $795 if you pulled every card in the set. But that figure is misleading: most of that value sits in the Mega Greninja ex SIR and MHR, which require luck to pull. Here is how the expected value actually breaks down per box, using current market prices and confirmed pull rates.
At the current box price of around $185, the average opener loses roughly $35 per box. This is normal for TCG sealed products. The top cards carry variance that makes the median outcome a loss, and you need above-average luck on SIR or MHR pulls to come out ahead. A Monte Carlo simulation across 100,000 openings at similar pull rates showed the median outcome sitting $36 below market box price.
At MSRP ($160.99), the math flips close to neutral. A few lucky SIR pulls would make a box opening profitable. This is why getting product at retail price matters so much. The difference between MSRP and secondary market is often the difference between a neutral and a losing opening.
The sealed hold argument for Chaos Rising rests on three things: the collector base behind Mega Greninja ex, the set's position in the Mega Evolution era, and where the box price currently sits.
Greninja has spent over a decade near the top of worldwide Pokemon popularity polls. It received special treatment in Smash Bros, expanding its fanbase beyond core TCG players. The Mega form debuted in Chaos Rising, and there is no earlier version to compare against, which keeps demand concentrated on this set. The Froakie IR triptych (Froakie, Frogadier, and Mega Greninja ex sharing a connected art scene across three cards) has held collector attention better than almost any single card in the set below the SIR tier.
The box is currently at its all-time low of $185, down from a launch high of $275. That 33% correction over two months tracks closely with Perfect Order (ME03), which dropped roughly 40% post-launch before stabilising. If Chaos Rising follows that pattern, the floor may be close.
The risks are real. A Mega Greninja ex Premium Collection released July 3, 2026, adding supply. Pitch Black launched July 17 and redirected collector capital. Print run expansions are always possible. Sealed holds are a long-term thesis. Boxes typically require 12-24 months before meaningful appreciation, and there are no guarantees.
If you know which Chaos Rising card you want, buying it directly costs a fraction of what you would spend opening boxes to find it. The Mega Greninja ex SIR currently trades around $470. To hit that card on average through opening, you would need roughly 14 booster boxes at $185 each. The single costs less than one box's worth of expected value on that specific pull.
The only scenario where opening beats buying singles is if you hit an above-average number of SIRs or land the MHR in a small number of boxes. That happens, but it is luck, not expectation. For anyone with a specific card in mind, the secondary market is the rational choice.
Singles have also corrected meaningfully since launch. The Mega Greninja ex SIR peaked near launch and has settled as supply increased. Anyone who waited is paying less than day-one buyers.
